Women of Color in the Academy Project (WOCAP) 2nd Annual Shirley Verrett Award Presentation on January 31, 2013

Robin WilsonThe Women of Color in the Academy Project is proud to announce that the 2012 Shirley Verrett Award will be presented to Robin Wilson, Associate Professor of Dance in the School of Music, Theatre & Dance

This annual award, established by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost, recognizes a U-M faculty member whose work has supported the success of women in creative fields who come from diverse cultural and racial backgrounds and advances diversity as part of the University's educational mission.

The Shirley Verrett Award honors the legacy of Shirley Verrett, the late University of Michigan James Earl Jones Distinguished University Professor of Voice; a teacher who "would have walked the world over for her students." An internationlly acclaimed opera singer who performed over 40 roles all over the world during the course of her illustrious four decade career, Ms. Verrett was one of the pioneering leaders in the generation of black singers after Marian Anderson's historical Metropolitan Opera debut in 1955.

A ceremony on Thursday, January 31, at 4:30 pm at the Stamps Auditorium will recognize Ms. Wilson for her dedication to promoting the success of women of color students and faculty in the creative arts and for her commitment to diversity as part of the University's mission.
