Join us for the final session of Food Literacy for All in 2021, featuring Patricia Escárcega and Leah Douglas in conversation with SFSI Program Manager Lilly Fink Shapiro on Thursday, June 10 at 12pm EST.

The 2021 virtual Food Literacy for All series is themed around the Politics on our Plate.  Past speakers in this series have discussed their vision for our food system (Session #1), the role of grassroots organizing (Session #2), and the impact of policy (Session #3). This fourth and final session will conclude the series with a conversation about the responsibility of the media. (Session #4).

Food Literacy for All is FREE, but registration is required.

The 2021 Food Literacy for All series is co-led by Andy Jones (UM School of Public Health), Devita Davison (FoodLab Detroit), and Lilly Fink Shapiro (UM Sustainable Food Systems Initiative).

Patricia Escárcega

Patricia Escárcega is a reporter at The Counter. She recently worked for the Los Angeles Times as a restaurant critic and has also worked for the Arizona Republic and Phoenix New Times as a dining reporter and dining critic, respectively. As the daughter of naranjeros (citrus pickers), she grew up in Southern California and worked as a proofreader, poet-in-the-schools, amateur librarian, and service industry factotum.

Leah Douglas

Leah Douglas is a journalist covering the business and politics of food and agriculture. She reports on a wide range of issues, including agribusiness, regulation, federal agencies, corporate consolidation, environmental issues, racial discrimination, and labor. She is currently a staff writer and associate editor at the Food and Environment Reporting Network [FERN].

Her work has been published in the Guardian, the Nation, the Washington Post, Mother Jones, NPR, Time, Fortune, and other outlets. Leah founded and wrote Food & Power, a first-of-its kind resource on food sector consolidation. Leah was the 2020 recipient of the National Farmers Union Milt Hakel Award for excellence in agricultural reporting and a member of the 2019-2020 cohort of the New Economies Reporting Project finance solutions fellowship.
