Topic Areas: Special Events

November 11, 2017 - 10:00am - 12:00pm
Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest, 1275 S Huron Street, Ypsilanti, Michigan

For 14 years, Girls Group has inspired young women in Washtenaw county to defy statistics, graduate from high school, and become first-generation college students. On November 11, 2017 they will hold their annual fundraiser, Honoring Our Educators. Girls Group would not be the strong, successful organization it is today without the support of educators in our community. This year, they are pleased to recognize three outstanding educators:

Gloria Thomas
Gloria is the Director of the University of North Carolina Women’s Center. She is remembered fondly as the Director of the Center for the Education of Women at the University of Michigan. Gloria was a Girls Group Advisory Board member, and has served, listened, and shared her wisdom for many years.

Pat Shure
Pat came to the University of Michigan in 1952, and has been making a difference ever since. Her professional life has centered around teaching and mathematics. As a member of the Girls Group Advisory Board, Pat has passionately mentored staff and students, with a focus on raising the academic bar.

Leigh A. Robertson
Leigh is field faculty at the University of Michigan School of Social Work. She has supported the Girls Group social work intern program since 2011, proudly providing graduate level training for as many as 15 interns each year. These interns work passionately with the Girls Group participants to reach their personal, educational, and career goals.

This annual fundraiser will honor these outstanding members of our community and celebrate the achievements of Girls Group participants.

Girls Group serves 400 middle school students, high school students, and high school graduates in Washtenaw County. Girls Group has mentored 110 young women to graduate from high school. To date, 15 participants have graduated from four-year universities and 5 have graduated with Associate’s degrees.

Girls Group participants are mentored and inspired by educated, experienced, and empathetic staff. Year-round programming focuses on: Academics, Life Skills, Relationships, Health and Wellness, and Community Service.
