Why we love it: Incoming SMTD Dean Aaron Dworkin had a vision to change the culture of classical music in America, and over the past 20 years, he’s done just that; by training and nurturing young African-American and Latino/a musicians through the Detroit-based Sphinx Organization, he has changed the cultural face and perception of orchestral music in America. For this performance, the nation’s top Black and Latino classical soloists -- alumni of the Sphinx Competition -- unite for an evening of works written by or inspired by great women, including pianist, composer, and U-M alumna Gabriela Lena Frank.

Why you’ll love it: This is an incredible chance to connect with work by women who are shaping the sound of contemporary classical music and with a vital vision for what the 21st century orchestra can and will look like. Arrive early for a pre-show Tune-In Event at 3:30 pm in the Rackham East Lounge (4th floor). Just 15 minutes long, UMS Tune-In Events are pre-show talks aimed at giving you new ways to think about and interpret the performance.
