Call for Nominations for the 10th Annual Shirley Verrett Award

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 4, 2022

The Women of Color in the Academy Project (WOCAP) is pleased to announce the call for nominations for the 10th annual Shirley Verrett Award. This award honors the late Shirley Verrett, a U-M Professor who “would have walked the world over for her students.” Ms. Verrett was a James Earl Jones Distinguished University Professor of Voice at the School of Music, Theatre & Dance and an internationally acclaimed opera singer with over 40 roles during the course of her illustrious four-decade career. She was one of the pioneering leaders in the generation of Black opera singers and her legacy continues to pave the way for female artists from diverse backgrounds.

**Due to the pandemic and having to cancel the previous award cycle, we have TWO awards to present this year! If you would like to submit two nominees for consideration, please complete this form for each nominee.***

AWARD DETAILS
The Award recognizes a faculty member whose work–teaching, performance, scholarship, or service–supports the success of female artists from diverse cultural and racial backgrounds. The nominee must be within the “Art” field as broadly defined to include literary, visual, and performance arts (e.g. poetry, photography, painting, dance, theatre).

Established by the Office of the Senior Vice Provost in 2012, the award carries a $5,000 prize and is available to all tenured/tenure-track faculty, clinical faculty, and lecturers at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.

NOMINATION
To nominate an individual, please use this nomination form or email your nomination materials to [email protected] by APRIL 4, 2022. The nomination requires two additional references of support which can include non-UM faculty. The Selection Committee will evaluate nominations based on the award criteria and references of support.

AWARD CELEBRATION
Save the date for the Shirley Verrett Award Ceremony scheduled for May 31, 2022. We are excited to share that Dr. Marcía Porter, College of Music faculty at Florida State University and former student & cousin of Shirley Verrett, will be returning for a special guest performance at the ceremony along with previous awardees for a special 10th-year anniversary celebration!
