Alicia Smith
Alica hopes to provide families affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder “with support, a dental voice, and greater interprofessional relationships among health providers.”
Alicia Smith is a dedicated wife, mother, and dental hygienist. From the beginning of her career as a dental hygienist, Alicia has consistently strived to advance her knowledge in the field. Alicia worked for several years as a dental hygienist at a dental practice in Chicago, where she was chosen to lead the dental hygiene team. Alicia enjoyed the problem-solving that comes with leadership. A long-time colleague of Alicia writes, “She has a gift of applying her knowledge and expertise and helping out in any situation.” During this time, Alicia was also a new mother, and she has become more resilient through the challenges of balancing a career and motherhood.
In 2016, Alicia joined a pediatric dental practice dedicated to serving children with special healthcare needs. This experience led Alicia to her passion for helping children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Parents of children with ASD report that caring for their child’s teeth can be difficult, and Alicia was inspired to do more for these families. So Alicia returned to school, and she graduated summa cum laude with her bachelor’s degree from Ferris State University in May 2023. Alicia is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Dental Hygiene from the University of Michigan. Alica hopes to provide families affected by ASD “with support, a dental voice, and greater interprofessional relationships among health providers.” She also teaches clinical dental hygiene, and she is honored to help shape the next generation of dental hygienists.
Alicia is completing her education while caring for her three children and being a supportive wife to her husband. She was inspired to go back to school by her mother, who earned a bachelor’s degree while working and raising her children. Today, Alicia serves as an inspiration to her own family and community.
CEW+ celebrates Alicia’s compassion and names her the Beth Halloran Scholar.
