WOCAP & ADVANCE Goal Setting Workshop & Write-in

August 30, 2019 9:00 am - 6:00 pm
Palmer Commons, 6th Floor Boardroom 5

Join WOCAP & ADVANCE for a Goal Setting Workshop & Write-In

WOCAP & ADVANCE invite you to our last Summer Write-in before the Fall semester madness begins! This will be an opportunity to brainstorm and/or plan your Fall writing goals and prepare for the upcoming academic year. This Write-in will include breakfast and lunch and will be held at Palmer Commons, 6th Floor.

Tentative Schedule

9:00 – 10:00 a.m.    Registration & Breakfast

9:45 – 10:00 a.m.  Optional Group Activity: Mindful Breathing

A basic method to begin integrating mindfulness practices into your busy life is to focus your attention on your own breathing—a practice simply called “mindful breathing.” Practicing mindful breathing is like strengthening your muscle of living in the present; as you practice more, you’ll find it easier to remain in the here and now, rather than being caught up in the past or in some fantasy about the future. Mindful breathing is an important skill to help you deal with stress, anxiety, and negative emotions, and sharpen your ability to concentrate! Join us for a 5-minute breathing activity before jumping into writing or work!

10:00 – 10:30 a.m. Optional Group Activity: Goal-Setting Workshop

While we all know the importance of taking time to set intentions and goals before each new academic year, sometimes the hardest part is just making the time to do it! A WOCAP member will lead an activity that will provide time to:  (1) brainstorm personal or professional goals, including long-term or short term writing or work goals or (2) review & modify your identified goals and begin creating tasks and a timeline to accomplish those goals and (3) begin integrating some goals into your time management applications.

10:30 – 12:30pm     Writing Block

12:30 – 1:30pm

1:00 – 2:00pm          Optional Group Activity:  U-M tour “Walking in the Steps of Black Women”

Join Professor LaKisha Simmons and students Brittany Simmons and Maria Garcia Reyna on a guided campus walking tour featuring landmarks of Black women’s history at the University of Michigan. The research for this walking tour was compiled by students in the History Department’s spring 2018 Michigan in the World program, a partnership with the Bentley Historical Library.  This free activity is part of the Welcome to Michigan 2019 events.

5:00 – 6:00pm         Networking Happy Hour
